Harris House by The Beach

The Harris House Hotel was opened in 1978 and is a family owned and operated business. It’s located in Ocean City, NJ just steps away from the beach and boardwalk. Along with a great location the hotel is known for its friendly staff, cleanliness and overall amenities including a large heated pool. The Hotel is in operation from Memorial Day Weekend through Columbus Day.

Problem

The demand for solar panels at The Harris House came from wanting to control rising energy prices and a high objective to lower the carbon footprint of the motel. The average utility bill per month was quickly approaching $3,000 when the owners realized solar needed to be explored.

Solution

Green Power Energy installed a 134.28 kW system on the hotel’s flat roof. The array is made up of 374 Trina 360w Solar Modules, SolarEdge Inverters, and Dynoraxx Racking Solution. This solar solution was designed to take advantage of full sun exposure year-round in order to offset the high electricity costs.

Result

By installing a solar array the site became a truly green operation, meeting Ken’s goals by powering the business with clean energy. The system reached its return on investment in year four and has collected over $150,000 worth of SREC income since being installed in 2013. The ground mounted array allowed for a system to offset the majority of the usage and allow the geothermal heating and cooling system to operate without additional costs.
