ANNANDALE, NJ

Great Swamp Greenhouses

The roof-mounted system was designed and installed as a turnkey solution by Green Power Energy utilizing high efficiency SunPower solar modules. It is expected to save The Great Swamp Greenhouses nearly $500,000 over the next 20 years through electric savings, tax savings, and extra revenue generated through as a result of New Jersey’s Solar Renewable Energy Certificates.

The system will produce nearly 100,000 kWhrs of electricity each year, offsetting an estimated 50% of the electrical usage on the property. This amount of power is equivalent to eliminating approximately 75 tons of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere each year.

“The bottom line is, we are always striving to be as environmentally conscious as possible,” said Kevin Beneduce, who is the son of the owners and a manager at the business. “Water and energy are essential for the volume and variety of plants we grow. Last year we focused on reducing water consumption and usage. This year, we wanted to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity.”

In addition to investing in solar on the property, The Great Swamp Greenhouses have taken other steps to limit their carbon footprint. Those steps include the installation of a new automated outdoor irrigation system for shrubs and trees and a 160-foot by 60-foot shade structure for the perennials, which reduces water consumption significantly.

For The Great Swamp Greenhouse, choosing the most efficient modules from SunPower was very important. “We wanted highly efficient and reliable panels. Kevin continued, “Our roof space was limited, and SunPower panels maximize power generation in constrained areas and have a great reputation for long-term performance.”

About The Great Swamp Greenhouse

The Great Swamp Greenhouse was opened in 1979 by owner Michael Beneduce and continues to operate today as a family owned business. The Beneduce family has roots in the industry dating back four generations to their ancestors who grew roses near Naples, Italy. Today, they operate as a four season garden center and nursery. “Buy Direct from the Grower” is more than just a catchy slogan, as Great Swamp Greenhouses grows over 90% of their own annuals and perennials, both at the Gillette location and at their 50 acre farm in Pittstown, NJ.   During Christmas season one will find over 2,500 premium cut Christmas trees, as well as approximately twenty thousand homegrown poinsettias.
